tech awards

Mike and I got gussied up for an inspiring evening this week at a black-tie dinner. We were invited to attend the Tech Awards Gala by a friend from church, who's father sponsored a table. While there we heard from Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He was honored with the Humanitarian award and spoke in a simple, positive way of some of the things he has done. Things like starting the Grameen Bank, making micro loans to impoverished women in India and many more things to assist the world's poorest with better health, housing, and education. He dreams of a world without poverty. He spoke a lot about 'social businesses', where businesses start a branch to benefit humanity, they recoup their costs and then the rest goes back to the businesses for the poor. Things like Dannon making yogurt in India with vitamin supplements to help malnourished children. After he talked them into doing this, he said it wasn't enough, the containers needed to be edible as well.

Through out the evening they showed video clips about and honored 25 laureates who have done awe inspiring things in 5 categories: Environmental, Economic Development, Education, Equality and Health. One laureate from each category was awarded a cash prize as well. Read about them all here: http://www.techawards.org/laureates/ . You really should read the summaries for each one linked on that website. They are changing the world.

It's fun to get dressed up for something other than church once in a while. The annual Christmas party at Leon's work is the best we get, but this year is conflicts with the boys' choir concert. I guess I'll just have to dress up for that instead. Hmm.
