Elise and I went whitewater rafting with her girl scout troop. We camped in
Coloma (where the gold rush started) and rafted the South Fork of the American River with class III rapids. We didn't lose anyone from our boat. No injuries, but several scouts fell out of other boats. There are a few spots at the largest rapids where commercial ventures take photos of the boats and then on your way back you can stop at their shop on the highway to view and purchase them(at $21 for one photo or $99 for a series of photos on a CD). Needless to say you will have to use your imagination of the following picture: Our raft is entering Hospital Bar. I'm in the front about to get drenched with an intense, serious look on my face ready to work hard and keep everyone alive and safe. Elise is behind me with the exact opposite look on her face, sheer joy and exhilaration, ready for the ride of the rapids. And the guide in the back, he has his mouth in a wide dark oval of surprise? or is he yelling a command? Sunglasses hide his eyes, so we can only surmise he was in total control of the raft since he delivered us safely downstream. This photo really hit me as an illustration of the different approaches Elise and I have to life.
