maine

Our first stop on our New England Heritage Quest was Maine. Lisa and Grandma Cherie picked us up at the Boston airport and we drove on Thursday evening to Kennebunk. Grandma Cherie came from Kennewick to Kennebunk in a day. We stayed at the Kennebunk Inn. In the morning, we walked down the street for breakfast, then drove to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge for a short hike on our way to Well, Maine. The birds were hiding from us at the wildlife refuge.

The historical society museum is usually closed on Fridays, but I spoke with their director on the phone beforehand. She graciously agreed to meet us after a meeting. While we were waiting for her, we went to check out the Atlantic Ocean. It was a clear sunny day and the water was easy to wade in with gentle waves lapping on the shore. The sand, rock and water were slightly different hues than we are used to at the Pacific. It was hard to leave. But our quest awaited.

We toured the Wells Historical Society Museum. It was built in a restored church that was built just after our ancestors left Wells. They had a Littlefield Hall in the museum with info about our ancestors. Edmund Littlefield came from England and built the first mill in Wells. After the museum, we visited the site of the mill (see photo).

We lunched at a small seaside lobster restaurant. I tried my first lobster roll. They served a tiny jello salad in a small black cup that had lots of chopped fruit and veggies. Thinking it was a cocktail sauce or chutney, Grandma Cherie added a little to her lobster roll.

After lunch, we drove out Littlefield Road to find a Littlefield cemetery. We found Lydia and Joseph (Sr.) and Lydia and Joseph (Jr.) right in a row.
