chemo week 1

Here's the update on chemo so far: Day 4 (Sunday) was the worst. I felt achy all over, in my bones and muscles. My digestive track felt cramped and jumbled. The chemo drugs work by killing all of the fast growing cells in your body, which include cancer cells and cells for hair, nails, mouth, stomach, intestines, and white blood cells. I felt a little better each day this week. But just when I thought I was getting better, I came down with a fever Friday. I've had a fever since then. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic to prevent bacterial growth in my body. I'm keeping the fever down with Tylenol. Andrew has a cold and has been coughing a lot. Some people can go their whole treatment without catching anything. But, it figures that on the first day of my low white blood cell count, I get sick. I hope I'm well enough this week to take advantage of some services for cancer patients. I have an appointment with a wig buddy and I am planning to go wig shopping before I lose my hair. And I signed up to take a painting class for cancer patients at the hospital.

I hope you can get rid of the fever and feel well enough to get out and around. Maybe you should wear the spiky hat to scare off the bugs :) That hat has to be a morale booster of some kind, either from fierceness or silliness.

Mickie

I love you Rachel, thinking and prayer for you often. I appreciate your updates and all the detail of exactly how you are feeling. one thing about wig shopping before your hair falls out you head will be smaller afterwards so take that in to consideration before you buy anything. But mostly I hope you feel good enough to try.

I agree with Connie's comment about the wig. I was fitted with my hair, but the shop adjusted it when it was gone. I had synthetic, but I would recommend real hair for you. I opened an oven, and my bangs melted. You need to be very careful about infections and, with kids, that's difficult. Glad they give you antibiotics for that. Happy to hear your fever is gone, but do get lots of rest and let others do the work.

I love you and wish we could be there. Thanks for keeping us posted. You're in all our prayers even the meal ones. Give everyone great big hugs for us.

Hi Rachel, Andy remembers you in every prayer and always asks for an update so tonight we looked up your blog and have been reading through it. Andy likes the spiked hat, in case you are wondering. We hope you are gaining strength and beating this stupid cancer. (Andy wanted me to write that last part :)
With love,
